Halsalm

Moderate hike of about 24 km up to a working alm, followed by a boatride across the Hintersee and return via the Zauberwald.

After a 20 minute bus ride on the 'Wanderbus' we shouldered our daypacks and started the climb up to the Halsalm. Cows are taken up to these mountain meadows in the summer so that easily accesible valley meadows can be used by the farmers to make hay for winter feed. A simple building, half barn, half living quarters, houses the farmhands. Milk, sandwiches, and often beer are available for purchase here.
Views of the Stadelhorn (2286m) accompanied us on our hike up.
This region is a breeding zone for golden eagles, there are several nesting sites along the side of the mountain. A telescope is provided by the park service about halfway up for viewing.
After the descend, we couldn't refuse the boatman's offer to give us the grand tour and ferry us across across the Hintersee lake for just 3 marks. Views of the Stadelhorn accompanied us as we were shown the underground springs feeding this natural lake.
