The Cape Girardeau Airport is only about 3 miles from town, via Interstate. After getting excellent directions from the lady at the National car rental counter, we cycled 26 miles on back roads to return to town.

Farms dotted the mostly flat landscape along the Missippi river basin and almost every hill spotted an old cemetery. We stopped to ask directions at the outskirts of town. "go straight and turn left on Main, the Salvation Army will be on your left" is what we were told. Guess not arriving in a car was equated to not having any funds by this helpful individual. We found a room at the little Motel by the bridge and planned our route for the next day.
Southern Illinois was surprisingle hilly, but very scenic. Thanks to Mable, who shared new trail info with us at our lunch stop, we left the Adventure Cycling Route to ride 12 miles on the new Rails to Trails path from Karnak to Vienna. Fortunately, it rained only at night, but the storms left the Mississippi and Ohio rivers looking a muddy brown. There was no room at the Cave in the Rock State Park Inn, so we spent the night at a rustic and surpringly clean Motel just outside town. Just in time, we barely had gotten our bikes on the porch when the skies opened up.
