Around the Hintersee, through the Zauberwald and back to Berchtesgaden

We took the bus to Hintersee and walked to the Deer Feeding area. The rangers provide food and shelter in the winter to protect the saplings in the National forest from deer damage. A telescope was set up and we were able to watch mountain goats in the higher elevations.
Most of the Hintersee was frozen over, judging by the tracks some courageous folks had taken a shortcut right across. We walked around the lake and then through the Zauberwald (magic forest). Its called magic forest because in this area an unusual microclimate exists which allows many high alpine plants to prosper in this low region.
The legend says that the two big mountains on either side had a fight and started throwing rocks at one another. by the time they realized neither could win the fight, the valley was filled with boulders.
The whole area is littered with boulders of all sizes, the trees often grow right on top.
